AR Furniture Placement App with Spatial Anchoring
An augmented-reality app that lets users place and resize virtual furniture in their real room, anchored accurately in space.
Buying furniture online is a gamble: a sofa that looks perfect in a photo may be too large for the room or clash with the walls. Augmented reality solves this by letting a shopper place a virtual model in their own room at real size. The difficulty is making the object stay convincingly in place as the phone moves. This project builds an AR furniture placement app with accurate spatial anchoring.
The app is built in Unity with AR Foundation, which wraps ARCore on Android and ARKit on iOS. Plane detection finds floors and walls, and a raycast from the screen places a furniture model on the detected surface. Spatial anchors keep the model fixed in the real world even when tracking is briefly lost. Models are imported at true real-world scale so that dimensions can be trusted, and the user can move, rotate and resize them with touch gestures. Light estimation reads the ambient light and adjusts the model's shading and shadows so that it blends with the room. A catalog screen lets the user browse pieces and switch between them.
You will learn how AR tracking, plane detection and anchors work, how to work with 3D assets and real-world scale and how to build a smooth mobile interface in C#. The Project Reference Guide explains the design and testing approach, and the Reference Implementation contains the Unity project with build instructions for both platforms.
