Procedurally Generated Open-World Game Engine Module

A procedural-generation module that builds an explorable open-world terrain, biomes, and points of interest at runtime.

Unreal EngineC++Procedural Generation

Handcrafting a huge game world takes years of artist time and produces enormous files. Procedural generation builds terrain from rules and a random seed instead, allowing vast worlds that differ every time. This project builds a procedural open-world module for Unreal Engine that generates terrain, biomes and points of interest at runtime.

Terrain is created from layered noise functions, such as Perlin or simplex noise, combined to make mountains, valleys and plains, and refined with erosion for realism. Biomes are assigned from temperature and moisture maps, and rules place trees, rocks and water accordingly, with points of interest such as villages or ruins positioned so that they do not overlap and are reachable. The world is divided into chunks that stream in and out around the player, with level-of-detail meshes so that distant land stays cheap to draw. Using a seed makes any world exactly reproducible, which helps testing and lets players share worlds. The module is written in C++ as an Unreal plugin, with attention to performance, threading and memory. Profiling results show frame time and generation cost.

You will learn procedural algorithms, engine programming in C++, streaming and optimization. The Project Reference Guide provides engine-level depth, and the Reference Implementation contains the plugin and a demonstration map.
